(WXYZ) – so many types of computers these days, it’s not an easy decision knowing which one is best for your child… laptops, netbooks and now tablets. so many choices. Amit Singh has been selling computers at Micro Center in Madison Heights for years.
“When parents first come into our store, we ask them the right qualifying questions to see what will fit their needs the best for their kids,” Singh says.
He offered to help give our viewers and readers a little help.
Netbooks
“Netbooks are really, really great,” Singh says. “One, great battery life. Two, super nice and light, ultra affordable. those are the pros. the cons… They have very limited processing power, so they’re not meant for high end gaming or video editing. Even iTunes will slow them down a bit, Singh says, and there’s no optical drive…
“It’s (a netbook) is perfect for a student who already has a full blown computer, whether it’s a laptop or a desktop.”
He says a netbook is great for email, surfing the web or doing research, and doing word of excel documents. They range in price from $199 to $399.
Laptops
As for laptops, they’re basically desktops in a smaller frame. and wow, can you a lot for your money these days. They come with big processors, lots of RAM, a huge hard drive, a camera etc. Stores are offering back to school deals to get your business. at Micro Center they’re selling a Dell Computer with a 14 inch screen, Intel 3 Processor, 4 gigs of RAM, 500 gig hard drive. It normally sells for $529, but it’s on sale for $399. Microsoft i s offering a deal. buy a qualifying laptop on their website, and you’ll get a free X-Box game console. if Apple is more to your liking, buy a Mac with educational pricing, and you’ll get a hundred bucks to spend at Apple’s app store.
Tablets
But what about tablets? the iPad and Samsung Galaxy for example seem to be all the rage these days They’re selling like crazy at Verizon as kids can rent online textbooks and download them right to their tablet. It makes their backpacks a whole lot lighter. and often what they save in renting instead of buying textbooks can pay for the price of the tablet. but remember you don’t have a separate keyboard with these tablets. It’s on screen. the iPad and Samsung Galaxy start at $499.
There is a lot to consider, but one thing’s for sure. With many back to school computer deals out there, now’s a good time for anyone who may need a computer to buy.
